Mk3 Oil Tank Cap

Forums

Am trying to rid the bike of various weeping, mistsand dribbles (!), worst of which is around the oil tank.

I have a Ceandess filler cap/dipstick, not sure if this is OEM, as it has a rudimentary 'handle' rivetted across the top, the underside being domed and sprung.

Would this have had a gasket/seal/washer? RGM website shows their cap as having a cork facing, Norvil list an oil tank cap 'seal' (069139)for all models (though not deluxe, but includes Commandos).... whereas Andover Norton show a gasket (824047) on their dedicated Mk3 listing, but this isn't shown on the official parts catalogue page...

Also, I know there was early controversy as to the correct height of the Low/High markings, how far should these be below the cap face?

Be interested to know what other Mk3 owners have......... thank you.

hi

yes the cap is domed underneth with a cork washer on it but the top is flat with no rivet holes. on the oil tank towards the tank there is a conection for a breather that sucks oil vapour out of the tank into the oil sepperator mounted on the side of the black airbox .

hope this helps

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply, Bob... but will ask if the dome and washer are sprung on yours? It's just that cork wouldn't seem to be the ideal material to use on mine, considering the design of the cap rim, though worth a try given the not too horrendous expense!

Thanks again...

Had same oil dribble / mist problem on my Mk 3 which has the sprung domed cap. Made my own cork washer which was a very tight fit at first but with use cap gets progressively easier to twist and lock. Oil tight now.

If I fill tank to the top line on dipstick get oil blowing out of breathers and blue smoke from exhaust , so only fill to half way between high and low lines. Read in some specialist Commando book that dipstick marks were wrong on some models.

Re dipstick length, when i ran my mk111 on the Lisbon run i had to top up often, and some blowback from the breather, then i was informed by a guru of great wisdom that being the last models, they were out of stock and used Triumph Trident ones, the level was then between the marks, and never varied, this sounded feasible..
