Mk.111 swing arm lateral play

Forums

In past MOT's my swingarm has been picked up for having to much lateral play. I have a Timken taper bearing conversion, but still use the thrust ends of the original bearings against the cradle (changed last year) The lateral movement can reduced to about 1mm with zero movement in rotation in relation to the cradle. Is this normal for the MKIII? or is something amiss ie worn / distorted cradle or swingarm? Any ideas would help, as it seems if I convert back to original set up it would still have lateral play.

The original set up requires shimming to minimise the gap between the thrust faces of the swing arm bushes and the thrust face of the engine cradle to reduce lateral movement eg 0.002". It seems your conversion would require the same. Shims go behind the bushes.

Cheers Simon,

I thought as much and now know what may have happened, I bet they were lost when I sent the swingarm forblastingand re-coating some years ago.
