Lost me thread plug wise

Forums

A little while ago, there was a thread on the Commando forum that span off to include types of spark plugs. One of those "can of worms" topics , this included NGK BPR7EIX Iridium that someone reccomended. I noted that at the time, and now am using same, what I didn"t manage was the "Mind the Gap" . I"m guessing 15 thou / :04 ? Sorry it"s such  a fag for so small a subject.   Bye the bye, I got a new Tacho Cable from the N.O.C Spares  people that arrived with no metal sheath arround the barrels area  or do you have to extra for that ?.Is that O.K?           Anyway,  Thanks         Alec Stevens

Didn't the protective shroud arrive with the 850 balance pipe exhausts ?  If you're not running balance pipes then you certainly don't need the protection. I haven't used one for years. Original 850 cables had a swaged cup for the lower end of the reinforcement which I haven't seen for years. Tacho Cable

Sorry, can't help you with the spark plug gap.

My '72 Tacho Cable does have the metal protective sleeve. I am pretty sure it's original as I have no recollection of ever replacing that cable.

Looking at the brochures the metal sleeve appears to have been fitted from the beginning. Although it is not present on the first bike shown at Earls Court.

Plug gap  should  be around 25 thou. But depending on your ignition system, could easily go to 30.

I  would expect them to  be 25-30 'out of the box'.

Will depend on your ignition system and coils.

Original set up, ie. points and Lucas coils 25 thou as Tony says is standard and perfectly ok. Platinum or iridium plugs can run a bigger gap (30 thou) without affecting running.

Bigger gaps = bigger sparks and better running but there is the risk of no spark if ignition system isn't up to it - if you had a magneto then you would probably have to go down to 20 thou simply to get it to go!

Thankfully with most of the new digital systems with corresponding modern coils the gap can go up to 40 thou or more, and many modern plugs are often supplied gapped at 1mm - way back in 1992 the then new cars I dealt with were built with 1.3mm (52 thou!) plug gaps as standard - and the plugs were good for 100,000 miles and more. OK, not really feasible on a Commando, but that is the kind of difference a decent ignition system can make.

Regards,

George
