Laydown gearbox shimming

Forums

I had a problem of the bike dropping out of top gearon my Model 7 and after trawling the net I came across this pearl of wisdom from Ken Macintosh (NZ) some years ago, worth checking out.

Re: Lay Down Gearbox.."The engagement of the top gear dogs is often too shallow, and one or two shim washers (we can supply) may be needed between the main bearing and the sleeve gear. You can check this by removing the gearbox sprocket, engaging top gear and seeing how much end float the sleeve gear has. You need some end float (min .020") or the selector will be overloaded. This also effects the end float of the mainshaft which should be between.004" and .012"."File it away, it may be useful someday.Paul Nicholls
