Introduction of AMC gearbox

Forums

Does anyone know, (well, obviously those with access to the records do), exactly when the AMC box replaced the laydown one?

I know it was late on 1956, I had an 88, No. 717XX which had gearbox N19XX, (though unfortunately I had to scrap the frame as the tubes were paper thin), but I assume the AMC boxes did not start at N1, so should my early 99 frame in the series 704XX be AMC or laydown?

Thanks a lot,

Niall

A small point, not generally known, is that when the Factory first fitted the Plumstead manufactured AMC box to Nortons, in April 1956, they did not run continually after that - a few more machines had the Norton Burman box in between before the AMC box became standard.

The first machines with the AMC box were numbered 68761 to 68828 then Norton Burmans were fitted to 68829 to 68931 inclusive and from then on all were AMC.The Bracebridge factory still held stocks of the old Laydown box and there was a cross-over period when either was fitted to the models then being produced. As the relatively new model 99 was most likely the flagship bike, at the time, it would not surprise anyone to find the new AMC gearboxes heading for that production line first.

Thanks Phil,

I knew that there would have been a (very) few Inters, whiich always had the Laydown Box built at that time, but I did not know that it was introduced in dribs and drabs like that, I would tend to think, as you suggest, that a 99 in the early 70XXX series would be AMC, unless somebody has an original one later than that with a Laydown box from new...
