Interstate Tank

Forums

Hi all

will an interstate tank swap over to my 750 72 Roadster combat, what mods are needed to do this as I could really use some extra mileage out of my tank. Thanks in advance

In order to make the conversion work, you'll need to use an Interstate seat (or substantially modify the shorter Roadster version). Lots of people fit the larger tank for long trips. There are no irreversible mods. Spacers and rubbers will need to be as per Interstate.

If you want to convert to factory spec then you'll need to change sidecovers too.

There have been suggestions that lower handlebars and disc brakes were a feature of the Interstates but the catalogue suggests they were options. I'm not sure that I've ever seen a factory photo of a drum-braked Interstate though and with five gallons of fuel and a passenger it would be working quite hard.

Thanks Richard for the reply, Wouldn't be permanent thing as I love the lines of my roadster just used for long trips. In oz you have a fair way between fuel stops in certain directions. I have the disc brake front so might start looking for one and a seat to suit.Side covers aren't really an issue in my case as would predominatly be ridden as a roadster.

Thanks for the advice

Another thing to bear in mind is it's next to impossible to remove the Roadster battery side panel when an Interstate tank is fitted, just because of how the tank sits. I have this arrangement on my Commando and and it never bothers me as it's only a couple of minutes to release the tank to get access.

Fwiw, I have a roadster with anInterstate tank (fitted by the DPO), I don't have this problem, it is a tight fit, but it I do not have to remove the tank to remove eitherside cover. That said, I do have to remove the side covers to remove the tank :) !

I havewitness marks on both tank underside & battery cover top side, but they are not visible (plastic panels may not be so forgiving?).

Fair enough Mike, but your bike is a Mk 111 with a different fastening method to earlier bikes that have the extended front bracket on the battery side panel that locates in the dzus fastener in the frame webbing.

your bike sounds like it needs taller tank rubbers to get it away from the side panels.
