Imported bikes and registration

Forums

Hi

I have a commando imported into the UK in 1981, at that time you were given a registration of the year of import therefore my bike has an 'X' registration. Anyone know if i can now get an age related plate  ?

As long as you can get a Dating Cert for the bike from a DVLA approved source such as the NOC then you can apply for age related plate, road tax will be nil too. There are gaps in the club records, but photos of the bike and numbers may be a way round that.

I applied to NOC for confirmation of the age of my Jubilee based on the engine and frame number.  The bike was in bits and had no number plate or documents when I bought it.

Based on the information provided by the NOC Records Officer and a covering letter he supplied, I applied to the DVLA for and age related number plate. The DVLA sent an inspector round to check the details, mainly engine and frame number, and he took a few photographs. A few days later I received a letter from the DVLA with the registration number and a document to get a number plate made up.

NOC and the DVLA require a fee. Details of the NOC records procedure are on this website and the DVLA has a web site section about registering vehicles as 'age related' and the form required.

You might want to get the form from the DVLA web site to register yours as an historic vehicle (no road tax or MOT). But, it depends on when your bike was made/registered as to when it qualifies as 'historic'. I think it may be in its 41st year i.e. over 40! The DVLA state: "More than 40 years old." And state: "Registered between 1st and 7th January 1980"

As i understood it you can get an age related plate when the bike is first registered in the UK, i.e when imported, by providing a dating cert. As my bike is already registered in the UK you can't have a second registration issued

thanks

Best thing is to talk to the Club Records Officer as he will be experienced in the current rules.

This is however something that happened a lot with ex-MOD vehicles and many have been successfully converted to the correct year suffix and 'Historic Vehicle' status.
