Ikon question

Forums

Hi, I've just got a pair of IKON dial a rides (7610-1653) to replace my shot stock shocks.I've put them in place and I'm a bit concerned about the lack of play in the mountings, the manual describes at great length the requirement for side to side play at the mounting points (section F6). I've used the sleeves supplied to fit the shocks, the new IKONS seem to have a hard nylon bush with almost no projection on the ferule and, whilst they have some slight roatation at the base, they were a tight fit into the top bracket; the play is certainlynowhere near thatof theold Girlings (even taking wear into consideration). I really don't want the shocks to fail as a result of swingarm stress especially en route to the Rally; I'm sure that I'm not the first to fit these, can anybody tell me if I am worrying unduly, or should I be looking to make some modifications to the mounting points?Regards

Mike

Minimum clearance between the mounting point sides and the frame mounting brackets is fine as long as the shock absorber ends are free to 'rotate'.

When they were still made by Koni, it was always said that 'Dial-a-rides' weren't suitable for Commandos as the top adjusting mechanism had insufficient clearance from the mounting plates. For this reason, I have never used them and stayed with the older type which have to have the springs removed to adjust the damping.

The crucial thing is that the top mounting plates, when torqued up should not be clamping on the sides of the top eye of the shock. If they are, rather than on the bush then you will be straining things. In the case of the old welded eyes on the Girlings, this could lead to the eye breaking off. I don't know if the top alloy retainer on the Ikons could actually break but suspension action would be compromised.

The ideal would be a longer bush designed to just slip in when the plates are parallel. If you can't achieve this in the time or can't remove the existing items then a couple of small OD washers would achieve the same thing - they're only there for lateral location and take no real load.

Thanks to all for responding, the lower eyes sem to be clear, the upper ones I'm not so sure about, there seems to be a few mm of nylon bush on the left, not so sure on the right hard to see due to the lock (Mk III).

I will back off the nut fractionally on the upper eye to ensure that it is not binding (and add a locknut to make sure that it does not slip), I'll add a couple of small washers to the bottom eyes to ensure that they can also rotate. I will in parallel organise some new steel inserts that are 20 thou or so oversize.
