Head bolt size?

Forums

Hi. I am sure this has come up before but need help in finding not only the whitworth head bolt size but wondering if there is a tool that fits the recessed head bolts fitted at the front of the head on a 72 750 commando. I havejust seen the same question for an 850is this the same on the 750?Those whom have had the pleasure will know it is a bit of a squeeze whist the engine is in the bike. Thank you. Mark.

I have an early 1972 Commando. On my bike the 2 front nuts, by the pushrod tunnels, require a thin shouldered socket or box spanner. The stud sizes are 5/16" cycle thread but the socket size is 1/4" WHIT. When using a socket, a 3" extension is about the right length to leave enough space to turn a rachet. The King Dick 3/8" drive sockets are the only type I have come across that did not need grinding down to fit these recesses.

My King Dick 3/16" socket will also fit the sleeve nuts by the exhausts that generally need a slim 3/16" WHIT spanner or ring to get at them.
