Gearing up an Atlas

Forums

The Atlas is a vibratory beast and feels too "busy" The easiest way to gear up would seem to be the Engine sprocket as we have to do something about the tired alternator and chain with a tight spot as well.. What is the biggest sprocket that will fit ?.

I have seen a 23 tooth engine sprocket on an Atlas but the primary chain was chewing away at the alternator carrier. It probably was not doing much to help the gearbox either. I would suggest a 22T engine sprocket and then up the gearbox to 21 or 22T and use a Commando 42T rear sprocket.

Also fit electronic ignition to get spot-on timing a plus a big single carb for bottom-end grunt to pull the higher gearing. Balancing the crankshaft properly goes a long way to helping cure the Atlas engine's vibes.

Thanks Phill, I have had my eye on a 22 engine sprocket ,the bike already has a 19inch rear wheel a 42 rear sprocket , Boyer ignition and a single carb, so I'm almost there, just need to check the box cog. I had planned to replace the rings on the Commando pistons and fit a compression plate so I will lighten and balance the pistons weight, Doubt I will get the crank out this time around as little milage done since I built the motor many years ago.
