Hi Neil,
There is nothing in the 1972 workshop manual for torque setting of the front wheel spindle but the 1977 850 MkIII manual does have it as 60 ft lb, the same as the rear wheel spindle.
It is worth using a torque wrench as particularly on the rear having it less than tight can effect the handling and 60 is actually pretty tight.

Thanks Iain and Mike for responding. I was of the same view on this but after finding a torque setting on 'Oldbritts' web site which was not in my book, I thought I would ask the question as I have just started working on the bike after 25 years

The pinch bolt does not need to be more than just nipped up to clamp the spindle and stop it moving about

I've never used a torque wrench on a wheel nut, just a decent swing on the spanner has worked well for me for 30+ years.
