Frame number

Forums

I have an 850 Commando with what I thought were matching engine and frame numbers.  Certainly, the VIN plate on the headstock has a number which matches that on the engine.

The thing is, there's a different number stamped directly onto the left hand side of the headstock.

Is it significant?

The number stamped on the headstock is what Dave Comeau refers to as the 'Frame Batch Sequence number'...It wasn't until the 850 Mk3 that they complicated things by referring to this sequence officially.

Some bikes have been registered based on the stamped number, others on the plate number !

So what you have may well be 'correct' and as it left the factory.  The red plate of course could have been replaced for any number of reasons - they fade and wear...Replacements never look quite right to the experienced eye though.

As Richard says, plus the number stamped on the frame pre MK3 is only significant if it was used on the V5 on first registration, which is what mine was used for, so I have to keep it preserved and visable.
