Fastback metal fuel tanks from Overseas India & USA

Forums

I have looked back through the forum but the last entries seem to be a few years back and I was hoping for an up to date view?  My 40+ yr old fastback fibre glass tank has had it, the ethanol proof coating only lasted 12 years and the people I have approached have all shied away from re lining it due to the age and potential further damage caused by this bloody ethanol.  Therefore the advice is to get a metal tank.  I know that it is possible to get repro tanks from India, and I know that 5-6 yrs ago there were horror stories about quality, fillers on wrong sides, substandard steel etc etc.

But what I would like to know has anyone you know bought a Norton tank from India in the past 18 months and what do you / they think of it?  And if it was good who was the seller?  Can you help??

I've been thinking about using the old fibreglass tank as a cover (cut out the base) over a metal tank on a production racer. As they did on the JPN. The JPN filler was a bit naff with a flip top hiding a screw-on cap inside. Could do something like they do on jap bikes and have a lockable flush cap with connector into the real tank but keeping the original 'monza' cap would be a challenge.

The advantage is it's original with the metal flakes in the gelcoat and doesn't require much metalworking talent to fabricate a durable aluminium "inner-tank".

Has anyone done this?
