Hi
I am getting close to buying an exhaust system.
I have an 850 with balance pipe which i do not want to use in, in favour of an unbalanced system.
But who to buy from, i want to buy it and fit it not play around making it fit.
Some of the stories on here are frightening.
Oh peashooter silencers the exhaust and collers, UK suppliers only please.
Thanks

Hi John
I am in a similar position to you re. new exhaust on an early 850. I have just fitted a set of 750 roadster pipes (without the balance pipe or need for collets) from Andover Norton (06.3375/6), these fitted perfectly with a set of old Commando Dunstal Decibel Megaphones using the Standard Roadster Silencer Brackets. I see no reason these wonât be a similar fit to Pea Shooters when I eventually obtain a set.
I believe Andover Norton are currently evaluating the possibility of supplying Pea Shooters containing sound proofing matting which I would like to fit. I guess if this works out it will be several months before they are available hence the borrowed Commando Dunstal silencers in the meantime.

Thanks for both replies i dread to ask the cost of the stainless system but will go to the site and check it out. Cost is an issue as i am into the thick end of 3k so far and a little way to go.
Dave can you post a picture of the dunstal silencers pleasse, are you saying the standard silencers are too loud. I liked the peashooter sound, and seem to remember that muffled silencers affects performance.

I got a pair of pea shooters from Viking in New Zealand many years ago (Paul Bryant? Name rings a bell), internally they are exact replicas of the factory originals and they sound amazing! They're based on an original, factory silencer sourced by Paul (if I've got that name right) from a member of either the NOC forum or possibly the INOA forum, I think in the early 2000s. I remember there was a lot of chatter about it at the time. And there's no wadding. I wouldn't want those pea shooters any quieter, compared to ear-splitting Harleys and messed-with 125s and scooters they're fine. Unfortunately they weren't chromed properly, but that's another story â chroming wasn't done in-house, so I wouldn't want to put anyone off exactly, just saying. And IIRC they're also available from Viking in stainless. They weren't cheap though â import duty to the UK doubled the price, last I heard L.P. Williams stocked Viking stuff â and I couldn't afford to buy them now.

Many years back when I collected a new Dommie silencer from Armours I asked about noise. They told me the metal insides were as originally designed, but they left out sound wadding because that attracts condensation especially from short trips and that causes the bottoms to rot out prematurely - followed by customer complaints. So if AN provide carbon steel pipes with 'proper' wadding, might the same thing (presumably/allegedly) happen to those?

Hi John
There should be a picture of the Dunstal silencer attached. I am not a fan of exhausts droning away when when I am riding although I do like the sound of Pea Shooters when a bike fitted with them passes by. I just think that if there is the possibility of a slightly quieter exhaust with the looks and tone of Pea Shooters but less volume then I would like to give them a try.

John
I faced replacing the system on my 1972 750 Roadster a couple of years back.
A bit strapped for cash I obtained some 'shop soiled' items from RGM Norton's Ebay shop RGM Clearance. Just some really minor scratches present. There are some exhaust parts in the shop today but these are 1.5" connection diameter silencers so just need to match with 1.5" pipes from RGM main site (standard is 1 3/8"). RGM are very helpful and have a fast delivery service.
The only modification required for my purchase was to shorten the pipes at the silencer connection end by around 18mm. I don't know the origin of the parts I purchased but RGM now supply Wassell.
I'm sure Andover Norton parts would be fine. I have had no serious problems with any parts from them or from RGM. 'Your mileage may vary' as they say.

Hi John. Like Anthony says go to Alldens. I did a lot of research before I made my decision and Alldens came out tops. I wanted a pair 4" shorter than standard. Not only did they do a great job, but they made them from my design and dimensions without ever seeing the bike and they fit perfectly! Being stainless they will last a long time too. I'm sure they could make you a pair from thier stock dimesions and you wouldn't even have to take your bike in. Mine weren't expensive at all. Once I've fitted them permanantly I'll send some pics for thier website.

Thanks again, have not bought the system yet, as still sorting the engine but the time is close.

You can take the bike to Alldens and have a complete exhaust system made in stainless steel as I had done with my 1970 Roadster. It will then fit perfectly and it will never rust.
