Early Fastback bodywork needed

Forums

Greetings Everyone - I used to be in the NOC many years ago, but then let my membership expire when I sold my beloved Commando in the mid-80s.

I've now re-joined though as I've just bought a 1968 (the model with the points where the mag used to be) 'Fastback'. Like so many of that era, the top frame tube snapped at some point due to the lack of the extra supporting frame tube. Unfortunately, it was put back together by someone with no understanding of motorcycle chassis dynamics - they welded it with about 15 degrees of rake, so it clearly didn't go far thereafter!

Anyway - I'd like to return it to as original condition as possible (I'm also doing another that will be a hooligan bike with loads of mods), but it now needs a tank, tailpiece and sidepanel (as well as a host of other parts) as they were all missing. The problem is that I need the ones where there are recesses for the Norton badges, not the later Fastback ones. As I can't find the bits anywhere this side of the Atlantic, I'd be most grateful if anyone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction!

Be careful with the tank, modern fuel eats uncoated fibreglass for breakfast and this happens to tanks on both sides of the pond. Not much in the way of replica Fastback tanks, some alloy ones sold by RGM, but if they are similar to the alloy fitted to Norvil fastbacks, the shape is not quite right, it's too square.

otherwise it's the old Indian tank crapshoot,p. Mine is very heavy and I have lined it. It does fit properly, but no recesses for the early tank badges.

Many thanks for the reply - I've gone down so many dead ends in trying to find the bits I need that I'm not sure where to turn!

While we're on the subject of these bikes, do you happen to know if the left side panel for the early Fastback is the same as any other model? The Interstate one looks very similar, for instance!

The early Fastback LH panel is steel and rare as rocking horse pooh. Later Fastbacks has a central oil tank and two fibreglass side panels. The Interstate has different side panels altogether. The original production racer used a Fastback oiltank though it was heavily modified with a hammer to allow the fitting of the PR fuel tank. If you see a Production racer for sale and it has a triangular roadster oil tank it probably aint the real McCoy.

Thanks for the useful info - have you any idea where I might find one that I could use as a pattern to make a replacement?

Martin - that is most appreciated, thank you - I would love to have it! I couldn't find your email address, so have sent you a PM instead. I'm new to this site and as it's so different to all the others I belong to, I haven't found where such info exists yet!

Hi Martin - many thanks, I would be delighted to take it - perhaps we'd be better off doing this by email - mine is patrick(at)foxonic.com!
