Dynamo drive system for early Dommies

Forums

I am currently helping out another NOC member to finalise the restoration of a 1954 dominator. We have encountered a problem with the drive arrangments for the dynamo via a slipping clutch. We do not have have the variously referred to spider spring or starfish spring that imparts tension to the drive via the fibre gear. Nowhere can I find an assembly drawing of the arrangemet showing what the spider/starfish spring is like or a part number for same. I was rather hoping that it was similar, or even the same as the one used in MO1L type single magnetos, which would somwhat ease the problem of trying to find one. Is anybody out there familiar with the arrangement or can throw any light (or friction) on this please, all contributions gratefully received. Regards Jim Hill 100583.

Hi Jim,

I can't find any diagram of the assembly but I'll carry on looking. I hope that the attached information is of help to you,

Regards, Rob.

Attached exploded diagram for you. The star washer is labelled D

Hello Paul, sounds just what I have been looking for, unfortunatley I cannot open the attatchment " Quick time and a de-compressor are needed to view this" is the message I get, sorry but I do not know enough about these machines to (computers) to understand that. Any other way I can receive your attatchment? Thanks for your time and trouble, Jim Hill

If you look in any Model 7 parts book or handbook thereis apicture of the engine in an exploded drawn format. On page 8 of the 1949 - 1955 handbook it also shows the Dominator engine, and the star washer can be clearly seen in the bottom left hand corner of the drawing. This drawing also show how the star washer, spacer and the drive gear are assembled for the dynamo.

Hi Jim, sorry you can't see the diagram. The image was captured on an Apple Mac so it's possible you will need apple quick time image drivers to view the image, sorry that never occurred to me when I posted the image as it's just a word document with the image posted on it.

Won't get into the politics of Mac vs PC, wrong arena. :o)

Hello the dynamo For the 1954 dominator 88 is a different set up to the dynamo on Mo1 Magdynamo The Star washer it a spring then there a clip and space washer fits in to hold it,this all fits behind the camshaft sprocket with fiber gear in place ,and has to be assembled first .then you have fit the camshaft drive chain and the intermediate drive gear sprocket with the magneto chain to and have the camshaft in the right place for the camshaft timing and then fit the hole lot in one go, not easy you need a helper . I have a 1954 Dominator 88 and rebuilt the motor .so we have first hand experience . hope this puts some light on this , your Anna J
