Dunstall Commando ???

Forums

Hi

I'm a new member and have just bought a 750 commando, and it says on the log book that it is a Dunstall? how can find out if it is a genuine one. It is in road trim but has twin carbs and the engine does sound very powerful, the frame plate has two markings the first is JN 1971 and 143884 and the engine number is 20M3S/143884 any help would be great

Thanks

Paul

Dunstall was a big fan of polishing the intake and exhaust ports. It would have been part of his stage I tuning kit. If you remove an exhaust pipe or a carburetter and find the ports are polished I would say that is definitely a Dunstall cylinder head but it may or may not have been installed at the dealership. You may also have polished rockers. Dunstall also provided 2 or 3 high lift cam shafts but it is very hard to tell what cam you have.

There is a whole raft of speculation on what is and isn't a genuine Dunstall, particularly on the American accessnorton website. The general gist is that the real McCoy will have Paul Dunstall as the first owner in the log book. All Commando's have twin carbs as standard (and sound powerfulsmiley) Dunstall started tuning Dominators and moved on to Commando's with the fragile 810 conversion and two into one into two exhaust system. Later he just turned out some cheap and cheerful seat/tank/mudguard combinations. Unless you take the engine apart and see what is in there you'll never know. I'm sometimes amazed at what appears on ebay with a "Dunstall" title. If it's been serviced by unscrupulous dealers over the years, any goodies will have probably been robbed and replaced with standard items. Just heard of a case like this from a Dommy owner at the Slate rally.

I don't really fancy stripping it down when there's nothing wrong with it, I was thinking if there are any records kept of the bikes that were worked on by Paul Dunstall or would this club hold any as I wouldn't mind if I had to pay for say a letter confirming it either way??

Thanks Paul

Yes I agree with what your saying, I'vebeen told that to have Dunstall on the Log Book here would have been very difficult to get it put on the log book if it was not genuine, but it could have happened so that's why I would be trying to get some official record if they exist?? of the Dunstall conversion. Which you have given me and idea to trace the original owner from the DVLA as the log book only shows the last owner not like the older buff log books that showed the history of owner back to the first one.

Thanks

Hi, I might be sending you up entirely the wrong tree and may have got the wrong person - however there is someone who may have information on Dunstalls. Many years ago a really helpful gent who lived just outside Burton on Trent called Alan Jones set up a Dunstall owners club. I may be wrong but I'm sure he is now the transfers man for the VMCC. I don't think it will hurt to send him an email to see if it is the same person and if it is you'll find him very helpful, but do please apologize to him if I've got it wrong.
