Dominator Front Mudguard Stays

Forums

Morning all.

I've been getting my bike up together for the first time for 40 years using the bits it came with. The front mudguard is the heavily valanced chrome item from a 1966 650ss. It's not going to be replaced anytime soon as money is being spent elsewhere. It will do for now but will probably be swapped for a lighter item in the future

My question is: how absolutely necessary are the mudguard stays? The mudguard is really solid on its four studs and the extra scaffolding seems superfluous. The nuts also come really close to the tyres when offered up.

Should have said - this is not ever going to be a concours bike!

Thanks

When you get round to replacing that mudguard, you'll probably have a Q of NOCers outside happy to take it off your hands...

If you've got 19 inch rims then a Commando mudguard will fit, I did this on my Mercury and only used the bottom stays to support it.
Beware, the mudguard has to be fitted close to the tyre so that the mudguard does not hit the frame cross member on full compression.  If it does hit the cross member it is quite alarming!

The deep valanced mudguards are pretty robust, but because they are fairly bulky, they do need to be supported to deal with rapid front wheel movement, particularly when riding on the frequently neglected and potholed UK roads. I would personally not want to rely on the four mudguard bridge studs alone.

Fitting with the screw heads inside will prevent tyre fouling, keep the nuts out of crud build-up, and as long as the screw length doesn't leave much exposed thread, does not look bad.

I have the same mudguard, but only had the rear two stays for many years.  I wouldn't trust the four bolts alone.  They are too close together and any bolt clearance could allow the guard to rock (bounce up and down at the nose and read)

Thanks for all the advice - reversing the bolts and perhaps just going for the rear set for now will be the starting position. Longer term I'll try a Commando front mudguard and see how that goes. Cheers
