Dave Taylor head steady update to the Mk.lla!

Forums

Done the deed, and fitted a D/T headsteady everything tickety boo in a straight line, but a trial "slalom" and you are aware that something is not quite right "down there ". there"s a timelag/inertia feeling as a gert big lump heaves It"sself from one side to the other. The R.G.M guidelines are 30 to 39 m.m for the extended suspension springs and 5 to 12`5 m.m for the gap between the yoke, and the plate below. First up, I tried 36 m.m and 11`5 m.m. Can"t see how you could get it down to 5 m.m for the plate /yoke dimensions but perhaps someone knows better. Any fine tuning from here can only mean looser surely , or is it anIso"s issue. The rosejoints all move smoothly with the bike off the stand and stiffen up when hauled on the main stand. Where do we go from here? Thanks for any input.

All related parts need to be in serviceable condition i.e swingarm spindle/bushes, wheel bearings, fork stanchions, bushes, bearings, iso gaps @ 0.004". The spring has no effect on handling, it's there to minimise vibration.

There are no 'bolt - on' remedies that will cure a Commando's handling problems. Plenty of products on the market that indicate that owners are experiencing problems, but they don't fix the mis-alignment caused by the factory production methods and mistakes.

What size front tyre have you fitted, to quicken up the steering you can go 90/90 19. Also have you supported the swingarm spindle in the gearbox cradle tube using clamps yet.
