Conrod oil holes

Forums

What is the cosensus of opinion on covering the conrod oil hole with the undrilled shell to prevent over oiling of the cylinder bore. Without a groove in the shell, the oil is only going to get 2 squirts per rev as the big end journal holes pass the conrod hole. (and it's going to have to quick to catch it)

The early 650 and 750 motors had conrods with no bleed holes. Later at engine 116372,6 start oil pump drives andstrengthened rodswith oiling holesarrivedto provided more lubrication to the pistons. Over-oiling then became a problem which was dealt with by the fitting of specialTwinflexpiston rings.

I ran a 1962 650 and a 1964 Atlas for many years with no engine problems turning up. Theyboth had the early conrods and 3 start oil pumps. I would suggest that how the bike is ridden and the choice of engine oil can make a huge difference to reliability.

Hi all

I personally would assemble the conn-rods as per the Norton commando workshop manual,,ie hole in shell lined up with drilling in conn-rod

I can only see benefits to the life of your engine, Oil being thrown about twice every revolution can only aid the mist (or is that mystery) to the lubrication of the mains/cam bearings and cylinder bores etc, also twice per rev fresher cooler oil replaces the oil spent when the holes line-up, so you get the best of both worlds oil pressure and oil flow. win win as I see it

I have always fitted the blank shell over the hole. I like to keep the oil in the shells, it works it's way out up the side of the rods anyway and up the bores etc. Good idea but unnesasary.
