compression spacer for Atlas

Forums

I just bought a spacer part # 06-4072. I am trying to reduce the compression of my Atlas to closer to normal. Does anyone know how to fit it? One head gasket above it and one below? Does it function as a head gasket? It is 2mm solid aluminium so I doubt it will because it will quickly work harden after torquing down.

Has anyone ever used one?

I used a 2mm Aluminium head gasket on my commando. It squeezed into the pushrod holes until it rubbed on the pushrods. It was a waste of time. You would probably be better off fitting a compressions plate between the barrel & crankcase. Steel ones are available for 750 Commandos, not sure if stud spacing is the same on an Atlas.

I would expect the compression plate to go between the crankcase and the bottom of the barrels, as I did on my son's 88. 2mm is pretty thick for a compression plate - you can run in to problems with setting valve clearances and rocker geometrywith that thickness at the barrel base. I run my Atlas with Commando pistons but no compression plate. To compensate for the higher compression and modern petrol, I set the timing to 28 deg btdc fully advanced. It seems absolutely fine like that. Bring back dished pistons!

I bet what I got is the Al head gasket Ian is talking about. I can solve the pushrod problem though. It must be just over twice as thick as a normal head gasket (and then it compresses some).
