Commando wheel bearings

Forums

Hi Im restoring a 71 commando with a drum brake front and both the workshop and parts manual show a double row bearing in the drum with the same part number as the rear. The problem is mine never had one and I cant see where it would fit.Did Norton bring out a few types of hub orhas this one been changed? The bike has been tampered with so this might be the case. Also I have to fit blinkers to roadworthy it and from looking at pics it looks like the rear ones go where the reflectors are on the taillight fairing but I cant see where the front ones bolt.Is there a special headlight nut or do I have to drill the headlight brackets. Can anyone help here regards Peter

For the front indicators , the indicator stalk itself secures the headlamp nacelle going throughslot in thechromed bracket and screwing into the captive nut inside each side of the nacelle. There's a locknut on the stalk to tighten it all up against the bracket.

The rear indicators screw into the captive nuts on either side of the tail bracket.

Hi Peter the drum brake wheel has 2 X single row bearings. The disc brake wheel has a double row bearing as does the cush drive rear wheel. The early bolt up rear wheel also only has single row bearings.

With the indicator issue, if you have an early 71 model with the Dominator type of headlight brackets and front yolk, these didn't come with indicators. Later (late 71 onwards) forks with the chromed triangular style headlight ears incorporate the front stalks in the headlight mounting nut (quite a coarse thread) Fitting indicators to a early set of forks could be done neatly if you find a lathe owner who could turn up some special screws to fit the fine thread that is in the side of the early headlight. If you need details of that thread, come back to me as I recall it was either a BSC or BSF thread.

The rear indicators should be fitted to a bracket under the fibreglass mudguard/light moulding, not where the reflectors mount.

Thanks Dave that cleared it up for me.With the bike being altered I wasnt sure about the bearings and the rear mudguard and taillight had been changed so I was unsure there as well. The parts book does actually show a drum brake with the double bearing in near the brake pad. regards Peter

Hi Peter, the later drum brake with the built in cush drive pegs(as opposed to the bolt up drum) does have a double row bearing located in the drum
