Commando tls brake blanks???

Forums

Hi guys I'm over from the big twins side

I have a mercury fitted with a commando tls front brake.....

I've got it in bits to clean up and it has had the air vents blanked off with very thin gauge aluminium ......is this normal the mesh is still there?

Now I know some trials bikes done this to keep the muck out...

I,figure they shouldn't be there ...

Was it a common modification or is it a waste of time....???

I'm fitting it back together without the blanks it just all seems odd to me

What do you reckon?

Yes it is quite normal to see this. Unless you are racing the TLSbrake seldom needs cooling air. The vent just allows water in (if you ride in the rain) which just helps the steel parts to go rusty on the inside etc.

PS: I love the "Easter Quiz" photo you posted but can't help with what model Norton it is.

The Commando TLS front brake came from the factory with the scoop and vents blanked off with the thin sheet metal. This is a safety thing - if you leave the blanking plates off, the brake will not work in wet weather.

I've had my 71 Commando since 1972,and i know it's history from new,as it was bought new by a good friend. These blanking plates were fitted as standard from new,and i support Alan's view that they only let water in,so unless you're going racing or at least using it to it's max on the road,i'd leave it in place.
