Forums

Hi All,

Just laid under the Commando and dragged the socket set to me and i aint got a socket that big, Years of running Japs and small size tools. I have a 1/2 inch socket set what size socket would i need.

Kind Regards

Andrew

I use a Beta 38mm wall drive socket. Which also fits the gearbox sprocket nut - have to use an adaptor as it's 3/4" drive.

I use a 1-1/2" AF socket(same as BSA fork top nuts)because it is close enough and cheap and available but the right size is probably 1" BSF (7/8" Whitworth?) and you won't be able to find that.

37mm might be closer. Just checked the table. 38mm is the closest metric.

Hi,

Great stuff, i dropped a 30mm spanner against it the largest i had, and it looked a bit lost. Time to do some shopping a 1/2 inch - 3/4 adapter and a 3/4 38mm socket it is..

Kind Regards

Andrew

If you also want to be able to remove your gearbox sprocket be sure to get a socket deep enough to clear the mainshaft. In the photo, only the largest (3/4" drive) will do the job. Luckily these show up on Ebay all the time.

A car water pump spanner is thin cranked and cheap (sykes pickavant I think) just needs filing to fit. On the early frames the frame cross member can prevent a straight fit with a socket.

Andrew, , if you have a Commando with the LARGE nut headed sump filter you can get a 3/8 drive oil filter socket which fits it. Its a 38mm . (A socket of that size is rare and costs a packet. )Most car supermarkets have them.

This is crazy,

I thought everyone with a Norton twin or two had the large RGM box spanner. It has two ends and the other is good for the primary chaincase large fixing nut and the large nut under the top yoke.

Don't know how I'd manage without it!

I never knew it was measured in MM. I believe it is 7/8 BSW but please check the spanner with RGM. I believe this is the link but please ask them.

It more than likely is an imperial size as you state, but a 38mm 'wall' drive socket fits and does the job with no damage to the nut - crazy!
