Commando identity

Forums

Hi,

I am just trying to piece together the numbers on my Commando.

Yes i will get a identity certificate once i can get the photos taken and sent off. So what i think i have is a mongrel of 78. The bike is a 1978 Mk111 Commando details are below.

First Registered 05-04-1978

Frame No 336278 Gearbox No 336278 Engine No -850-335398 With this being a late 78 model and reading through Nortons history do you think this was one of the last 30 to be made that year out of spares they had left over , but then why dont the numbers match. Also i have a huge file of varius work carried out plus endless parts bought but not engine casings or a new engine . Its got 20 thou on the clock and looking through old MOTs and the previous owners i feel the mileage is not far off.Looking through the files and piecing it together if it had a new engine it was very early on, I am sure one or two members can shed some light.

Kind Regards

Do the old MOTs reference the same engine and frame serial numbers as you have shown?

Hi Mike,

I will up date as i go through the paperwork, i have an old log book from 2000/2001 it had 3 former keepers and at that point still running matching numbers on the log book and still does today 336278 i will get it changed in due course. It has got 6 former keepers and the guy i bought it off only had it 5 months prior, with another Commando in the garage and a few other bikes what i can gather he was getting some ear ache, he never used it and it was sold.

MOTs as promised issue dates.

21/11/1998 VIN Not found ,Fame powder coated ,Milage 18132

21/3/2000 VIN 336278 Milage 18229

17/ 4/2001 VIN 335398 Engine number Milage 21207

5/8/2015 VIN 336278 I got it tested Milage 21610

As you can see little use. A couple of owners never used it , and i think at one point it was off the road for 8 years . The story has it the previous owner to me bought it from a woman who"s father left it to her in his will . When i got it everthing was tight clutch heavy struggled to find neutral, but after a few miles it all smoothed out and its a pleasure to ride.

Kind Regards
