Ian is correct about the length of the pushrod for his bike.
The standard 99 rod depends on the year of the bike and the clutch fitted and so might bea little different to Ian's. The later SS clutches had extra plates but a thinner pressure plate to compensate. If you have a pre-1961 bike then you may have less plates and a thicker pressure plate. You may even have a replacement unit from a different model.
My 99 has a 1961 ES2 clutch fitted which came with less plates than the SS bikes but still had the thinner pressure plate. It is possible to mix and match the parts which then makes getting the pushrod length correct a bit of a challenge.

the engine is a 1960model and the pushrod i have bought is 9 1/2 inches long.i had originally thought that the clutch required 5 friction and 5 plain plates( is that only the ss models),but with the deep pressure plate added this does not work.
with a 4-4 plate setup i am getting some adjustment but i think the pushrod still needs to be 3/16 longer.

A little more data to cons…
A little more data to consider, Pushrod lengths are approximate and part numbers may have changed. The rods need to be at least 6mm in dia or they will bend/flex. If length of rod is in doubt buy the longest and grind to fit but be aware that excess heat may destroy the hardness of the steel. Also, before cutting ensure that the actuator arm is correctly positioned in the gearbox. It is very easy for the indent in this arm to slip past the ball bearing and totally mess up any adjustment. i have some 6mm dia bar at work, think i will cut new slightly longer one and harden it.
