Clutch not working

I have an 850 Commando which has been off the road for almost 2 years. Done various things including changing some of the gear change parts and have put it all back together but the clutch is not working. I have also replaced the cable and it feels fine when you pull the lever in (just like I remember from before). I thought it might just be a bit sticky after standing for a long time but even when I put it in gear and put onthe rear brake, I cannot make the clutch work as I stand on the kick start. Any ideas?
