The clutch operation on my newly acquired bike is truly horrible so I dismantled the clutch. On inspection the clutch plates look new, the clutch drum is in good condition but the teeth on the Clutch Centre are badly worn so I'm looking to replace it. I fear I know the answer to this question but can the Clutch Centre be replaced whilst leaving the Clutch Drum, Primary Chain etc in place? Regards to all

I have fitted a new clutch…

No, the whole primary drive…
No, the whole primary drive has to come off to access the circlip at the back of the clutch drum.
Replace the clutch location circlip on the g/box mainshaft with 06-8072. (this is the circlip fitted to the Mk3 starter overload shaft) A much stronger circlip than the parts list item. It will need stoning down a bit to fit the circlip groove. The clutch mainshaft nut torque setting is wrong in the manual.
Should be no more than 50 flbs and use loctite on the splines and thread.

I have fitted a new clutch centre which is hardened though I still have gearbox issues selecting neutral etc. with clutch drag and slip at high revs. The drum was too expensive to replace so things I am trying are, swapping order of plates, fitting a clutch nut with a seal for the pushrod as bronze plates don't like migrating ep90, and a crank reed valve breather as excess oil leaks from sump into primary, either from wetsumping or during use. The crank seal was new but with these old bikes you never know, so I would proceed in stages. Meanwhile the weather is too good not to ride so without any dismantling I have just 'cleaned' clutch by running for ten minutes with half a pint of petrol in the primary and will see tomorrow. NB the circlip on mainshaft behind the drum should be a new one each time you fit it, especially if you go to 70ftlbs. Good luck.
