Carb woes

Forums

Got the LR Fastback back together and ready for its MOT. Running well apart from occasional popping and banging on the overrun or when the engine isn't loaded. However took the bike out this afternoon and there was a smell of petrol in the garage...ominous. It looks as if petrol - even with the taps shut - is escaping from the carbs back through the carb inlet. There is petrol dripping (every minute or so) from the carb inlet rubbers. I stripped the carbs and cleaned them as the bike hadn't been running for 2-3 years (judging by the MOT/tax disc).

Suggestions welcome. Other than that the bike is going and looking great.

get new Viton-tipped float chamber needles...

Thanks Dave - I've just stripped the carbs and agree that the float needles, which probably the originals, have seen better days. Patience is a virtue...

I would also change the petcocks. With them closed there should not have been any leakage at the carbs.

Thanks Mike - when I put petrol in the tank for the first time in 6 months on Tuesday the n/s leaked when the tap was on. Mysteriously, on Saturday when I took it out for a shake down the leak had stopped...?? By that time I'd ordered a new petcock, which didn't arrive on Saturday as expected but since the leak has stopped I didn't worry too much. Put it down to the seal getting wet/in place again. However when I stripped the carbs tonight I've found that the tap does leak - only a few drop per minute but enough I guess. Glad now I've got one on the way - hopefully it'll arrive around the same time as the needles and maybe...just maybe, I'll get the LR in for an MOT. Fingers crossed.
