Blowing fuses

Forums

Has anyone had the main fuse blowing and found that the ignition switch was as fault? I've done nothing to the bike and all of a sudden it's started to blow the main fuse! I can switch the ignition on and all is good, I can kick her over and she'll start but almost immediately will pop the fuse. When I bypass the switch she'll run fine, just wondering if anyone has experienced this problem, oh the switch was new around a year ago and all connections are clean and tight.

Hi Mac,

Just so you know someone has read your post and put some thought into your question ...

I have no idea what the problem could be!

Can you confirm what the bike is ? They have different switches and charging circuits.

When you say you bypass the switch, what do you do exactly ?

Can you try removing all the wires from the switch with the exception of the volts in and ignition out and see what happens.

Give more details and I shall give it more thought.

Regards

Tony

Tonyâs not alone; Iâve been trying to get my head around this one, but can think of no scenario where the ignition switch would only short circuit when the engine is running. The best I can come up with is a wire getting nipped & shorting somewhere when the engine is jumping about on itâs isolastics, & you re eliminating it from the circuit when you bypass the switch. As Tony says, more information would be helpful, in particular how you are bypassing the switch.

Hi Mac

Best suggestion I can think of is check the rear brake switch wiring as it can get melted by the exhaust pipe and short out as the engine dances around.

Good luck.

Hi guys thanks for putting in your 2 peneth. Bypassing the switch was done by removing the supply from the battery into the switch and the output to the ignition from the switch then joining them together which cleared the fault. A bit of a red herring though as after some more digging I found the culprit was the rear brake light M/switch. The bike is a 73 750 with the JPN fairing, tank shroud, and seat, so the wiring is, lets say "a bit different from the manuals" and now I realise that I could have done things a wee bit better in the design of the home made harness, still these things are an ongoing work in progress are they not. So the way forward is to use the £1.50 microswitch instead of the 95p version.
