My Boyer is about 35 years old and after a period of poor starting the spark appears weak. new 6v coils, copper leads, no resistor plug caps, N7Y etc. With the current exchange rate being favourable I bit the bullet and sent off for a Trispark system from Australia. In the meantime I video'd the boyer spark for comparison and fitted my old points system back on. The AAU was well past it's best so I bored out the cam and bushed the spindle to give me 0.0015" clearance. With my old 12v high power red lucas coils, the spark is about twice the size of the boyer spark and it starts with only half a kick. Progress?

Sounds like progress. With two 850 Commandos , a Mk3 withlatest Boyer ignitionand a Mk1A wherestandardpoints are retained , have to say I prefer the original points set up. With points timing checked and adjusted as necessary about every three thousand miles , starting is second or third kick and throttle response crisper than the Boyer which ,despite the almost alwaysfirst kick starting , produces a more ponderous throttle response. OK ,once set the Boyer never needs touching but checking and adjusting points is quick and simple once you'vegone through it a couple of times.

You can have the best of both worlds, you can fit a points assist unit(Pazon make a good one) its cheap but still allows easy timing with a timing indicator built in, the condenser is redundant, the points last for ever and you get to keep the standard AR response. All it needs is for someone to stock it in the UK!!.

It is vital to check the timing with a strobe. Just locking the A/R cam forward and setting the timing will result is a fully advanced spark at about 40 degrees BTDC. The A/R units I have are all very sloppy and need some engineering to sort out the slop. I also welded on some decent pillars for the springs so that the springs would not cut into the original pressed steel pillars. Also the fly weights can end up dragging/binding against the back plate when they are well worn

Boyer also produce one, and I fitted it to my Matchless single over 20 years ago and it is still working well. They are still available, bought another for my 'new' BSA single last December for under £33.

I've just set up another advance/retard unit in my lathe and with a dial test indicator there is 12 thou of slack in the cam.
