72 roadster clutch

finally got most of the problems with lack of use sorted, but on a a final check , found that the clutch basket can be "wobbled"a bit ,its torqued to the lower value, and new circlip fitted is this a feature on the comando ??? cant seem to see anything in the manual and doesnt seem right any help pls its stopped raining Smile so would like to get her on the road thxs guys

That is surely just the clutch centre bearing play. Even torquing the nut to the books 70ft/lbs won't prevent that. As long as its not excessive its fine. If the centre has play independently then its in the sleeve bushes but they'd have to be hopelessly worn to show up like that. I replaced my very old bearing because of that but it only made a little difference.

I was told once a 1/32 of an inch play measured at the primary chain teeth was quite normal and acceptable even replacing a bearing will normally show a similar amount. Check the inner is not moving also due to wear in the sleeve gear bushes that locate the mainshaft.

Many say the torque figure of 70lb/ft is to high and even may be a misprint. An that 40lb/ft should be used along with loctite (there are currently threads on the Access Norton website about this) as the higher torque may even lead to failure of the locating circlip on the inner face of the clutch centre.
