I'd asked what Commando frame tubes were fabricated from, as I had some weld repairs to do on my 1971 model. I received a couple of replies that were pretty much diametrically opposed, and I couldn't locate any information in my library, so I did some first-hand research.

The X-ray diffraction tester in my plant's materials testing lab. says that the tubes are fabricated from mild steel; very similar to C-1020 hot-rolled carbon steel. We successfully completed several weld repairs on the swinging arm today using a MIG process with mild steel filler rod.
