1948 ES2... Just replaced the cage and rollers in my clutch as the old one was so worn the rollers were falling out.
When I tighten the backing plate nuts the rollers lock up. I have double checked the components and all seems correct.
My only thought is the backing plate might be slightly warped but would appreciate any comments.

I did manage to get a new set of rollers here in Aus to go with the new cage.
I read that the official diagram had the actual plate behind the rubbers shown back the front which I have got that correct but are you also saying that the actual cage is also reversed in the official diagram because that may be my issue as I have followed the diagram for the cage orientation.

Have now got it sorted..
Two issues. The first was that cage did need to be installed in the reverse orientation to the drawing.
The second was a bit strange. The orientation of the bolt holes relative to the backing plate had to be changed as it only centred correctly in one of the three positions allowing the cage to rotate.

Some of the official Norton images show the backing plate/inner race or bearing cage in a back to front position !!..I am not sure if it can be assembled like that but it might be your issue.If the plate had to be replaced due to wear then its also just as likely the drum track is equally as bad, Once you have sorted this out ,loosely assemble the parts and see if you can get a 3 thou (or bigger feeler guage between track and roller . If so you could buy some 1 thou oversize rollers ,a set of these will take out 2 thou of the slack and leave you with 1 or 2 thou working clearance ,fiddly to fit but a better clutch. Rollers are not easy to find at a fair price ,I bought a bag of 50. enough for 2 clutches. Sounds like you primary has been working without oil .
