Norton 100 - Update - Sunday 19th May

‘Norton 100’ is being staged in the car park to the rear of THE WHARF INN, Welford, Leicestershire, NN6 6JQ

Situated on the A5199 Welford Road at the northern edge of the village.

Some important issues

Communications; the venue is in a dip centred upon the river and the canal.  There may be little or no signal for some mobile telephones.

Car Parking; unless you have prior permission from the Branch there will be no car parking available - please park in the village [200 yards] and walk back down to the venue.

Food and drink; will be available all day both inside and outside the pub.

The films; Mike Daly will be making two video films for the Club’s You-Tube channel.  One will feature just the machines, the second one will involve brief conversations with their owners about any changes from standard or any other interesting details.  Please prepare a paragraph or two in advance - Mike will attempt to film as many owners and their machines as possible.

T-shirts; we have a limited edition T-shirt to commemorate the event.  Just 25 shirts have been printed with the logo from Energette in a mixture of sizes.  The price is £20, cash only on the day, all proceeds to James Lansdowne Norton’s preferred charity, The Salvation Army.  Please contact Colin Cheney if you wish to reserve a T-shirt; details in Roadholder magazine.

Schedule

From 8am; vans and trailers.  Branch Members and friends in attendance will assist with unloading of machines arriving in vans or on trailers.  Vehicles must be moved to the Gliding Club with a shuttle car bringing the drivers back to the venue.

From 10am; just bikes, please.  All Norton riders will be greeted with vouchers for free tea and coffee.  Separate parking areas for Special Machines, Singles, Dominators, Commandos, Rotaries and 961 machines.  There is a lower parking area for non-Norton machines.  The site shares access to the marina and the access road for residents must be kept clear at all times.  If in doubt when you arrive please ask a branch member.

From 1pm; awards; there are two trophies - Best Single and Best Twin.  These are simple and elegant designs and this is not a concours event

From 2pm; Meet our own Norton Royalty, Judith Morris, James’ granddaughter, during ’The Direct Link’ and hold an artefact actually made by James himself for a suitable donation to The Salvation Army.

From 3pm; dispersal.  You are welcome to stay as long as you wish and to assist with loading vans and trailers with machines.

Directions to event;

As detailed earlier, the venue is on A5199 at Welford, Leicestershire. The closest large junction is A14 junction 1.

From the North; leave M1 at junction 19 [M1/M6/A14 interchange] and join A14.  Leave at junction 1, signed Welford.  Or follow directions below from junction 20 M1.

From the South; a brief look at a map will reveal that there is no east-bound access to A14 from M1 when travelling north.  Therefore, if approaching from either north or south you may join A4304 from Junction 20 M1, travel through Walcote and North Kilworth [note; speed cameras in both villages], take right fork after North Kilworth Marina, [Station Road], signed Sibbertoft, join A5199.  Proceed towards Welford.  The venue is on the right before the village begins; look for the NOC flag.  If travelling directly to the Gliding Club turn immediately left having joined A5199 and look for NOC signs.

From East or West; leave A14 at junction 1, signed Welford, proceed through the village, cross the river, venue is on the left.

If on old [and usually much nicer] roads, approach via the Market Harborough to Lutterworth road, A4304, look out for signs in the village of Husband’s Bosworth for Welford.  From the south use A5 / A426 and then A4304 as above.

Finally; this is a one-off event.  Please come with an abundance of humour, goodwill, courtesy and especially patience, and expect to see many fantastic Norton motorcycles and their owners.
