Hi,
I am in process of re building my ex Oman police force Interpol. I am finding some evidence of why the said police force did not want it! The previous owner (after the Arab Police) sorted out the critical stuff, and made it run very well actually, but on stripping I've found some light scoring on both barrels. after a 24 year lay up I had her up and running without difficulty, and no issues. I wanted to take a look inside and re new anything that needed to be. The barrels are lightly scored whilst pistons and rings were obviously re placed in the past, and are ok. Do I bother about the scoring or as it ran fine just leave it? It is on standard bores.
Anyway I am getting to know Mick Hemmings Mc's (v/good service!) quite well now and have not had such fun spending the hard earned for ages.

Thanks Simon, I wanted you…
Thanks Simon,
I wanted you to say something like ' I had one like that and rode it thousands of miles with no trouble' ha ha. well I guess I knew the answer really but you know that feeling of burying your head in the sand, and hoping things will go away ? I have ordered new plus 20 pistons and a rebore awaits!
How come the Norton workshop manual lists first oversize as plus 10 and I can only get plus 20?

According to Mick Hemmings, that's how it was. There was a factory +10 thou. piston back then but these days they go up from +20 thou.

Scoring of the bores means increased blow by past the piston rings, which will result in high oil consumption and reduced power. A rebore, properhoning and new ringswould seem to be the thing to do. With ref. to proper honing, the rings shouldbed inwith minimal mileage.
