Jubilee bonded clutch plate

The inner thicker back plate (C8 part No. 21268) is this bonded both sides or just one side. Is it stepped, mine is bonded one side and is flat on the back.

Re previous message.

Ive now found in my pile of bits a stepped clutch plate, plain both sides and thicker than the others, is this the one nearest the gearbox. The drawing shows a bonded plate nearest the gearbox.

So I now have this this thicker plane plate and a thicker plate bonded one side and plain on the other side, I,m now confused. I believe the drawing may not be accurate.

Your auumptions are correct on both.

The plate behind the sprocket has the 3 holes for the spring posts, and is bonded on the inside only. It 'bonds' the clutch housing into one (thats the plan, anyway) when the clutch is home (ie, transmitting drive). Its to stop the plates rattling backwards & forwards when you go from drive to over-run.

The first plate into the basket is a thicker (3mm instead of 2mm) plain plate, with the step inwards. Its to allow for the curvature of the basket at the bottom.

Still a bit confused as Ive just noticed today that the spare engine I have (No. 84522 Yr 1959) has stops/dogs on the rear of the clutch centre, you can see this in parts book plate C, is this to stop the plates from touching the rear of the clutch housing. The clutch centre in my bike (No. 91867 Late 1959 early 1960) has no stops/dogs so the clutch plate nearest the gearbox rests against the back of the clutch housing, is this correct.

Is there a different plate fitting arrangement for these different clutch centres.

Hi John,

Yes - you have found the two types of clutch used. Early Jubilees used a centre with end stops. The first plate that went in was a thicker plate, bonded, - with inner tabs like a friction plate, and a plain plate at the back to hold the studs. In service, this was found to 'rattle' inside the outer cage or housing - hence the change to a bonded plate at the back.

See two pictures attached - sadly, the later picture is an amalgam (by the artist) of both types, so I have annotated the differences - mainly, the the first plate in should now be a plain plate, stepped on its outer rim, with outer tabs. Plus the drawing is missing one friction plate.

I had mixed up the clutch plates from both engines, Until the other day I was not aware that there was two types of clutch. Put the right clutch plates back in the working engine, clutch now works.
