Crank is stiff to turn

Hi,

I hope everybody is fit & well in these difficult times.

After bolting down the barrel in my rebuild I turned the crank but when the pistons were reaching the bottom it became very stiff until they started on there way up again, It appears that I have done something wrong but Im completely baffled at what the problem is.

I would be grateful if someone could give me a clue.

Ok Robert the crank was reground taking 10 thou and I apparently received minus 10 thou shells to fit , so what did I do wrong and more importantly what do I do to make things right?

Plastigage  will  tell all. Or a decent internal  mike. Or make up a go/no go stick. and check the width to the height.

I don't have the factory spec for the clearance, but I would think one thou would work well . From your replies I don't think you have the necessary experience to rectify the rods yourself. I think your rods are past "fetlling" and need a good engineer to re-size. However sometimes just cleaning and re-building will settle things right. With a regrind and new shells half a thou is enough to give problems.

Lubrication is there. Just no room for it to float the surfaces . Not supposed to touch. I don't think you have the ability to solve it. Find a good engineer. My own crank is still standard but with lots of wear, I fitted some new shells and they came up tight ,so like yours likely to be a thou or two oval. I will also be having a 10 thou grind and am confident that they will be too stiff to use without some re-sizing or a set of new thunder rods. ££££££££ GULP!!

During a recent rebuild I found the crank shaft turning a bit tight. The cause was to tight adjustment of the cam chain.
