57 Dominator headlight shell and light switch

Posted by steve_coleman at December 01. 2018

Can anyone advise as to which is the correct 3 position light switch for a 57 dominator 99 (magneto ign) and should the headlight have the "D" type hole or the larger round hole for fitting the correct switch.

Steve

hello as far as I know the 1957 was still using the U39 lighting switch  round hole with a notch to stop it rotating big clip on under side and a bugger to fit,        yours  anna j

Hi Steve, attached is a photo of my headlamp from a 1957 Dominator 99. I bought it in 1962 so it is original. the hole is definitely 'D' shaped.

I have tried to send 4 photo's but can't work out how to, there are 3 others of the switch which has a manufacturing date of 10 56 (October).

I will send the others separately.

Regards

Dick

Hi Dick, thanks so much for taking the time to send these very clear photos,

I managed to acquire a very good headlight shell (Lucas MCH61) which like yours has the "D" hole. The headlight currently fitted needs to be replaced but it has a large round hole with an appropriate switch, I could easily cut the "D"hole out to the large round hole and fit the switch I have, but was loathed to cut a perfectly good shell which are hard to get hold of now. Because of this your message is good news for me as if I can find a switch as in your photo I can put it all back to how it should be.

Is there a parts number on your switch?

Thanks again for your message and photos Dick, I really appreciate it.

Best regards, Steve

Hi Steve/Anna,

The number next to the date stamp is, as far as I can make out, 31626 A
There must be something amiss with the records as my bike was first registered in February 1957. The rear shockers were supposed to change from Armstrongs to Girling at the end of !956 but mine was fitted with Armstrongs, 1 dated early 56 and one 55 so they certainly didn't like to keep old stock.

Dick

Hi Dick/Anna,

Thanks again for your help and interest.

I think 31626 A refers to a 41SA switch as you say Anna, I think I will go with that and the MCH61 shell. My bike was despatched in March 57 so not far from yours Dick. It seems that 55/56 models had a MCH58 shell with a separate panel fitted to it, sometimes known as "Gas Mask", this had a U39 switch. Pre 55 models had the separate panel I believe, again with a U39.

Best regards

Steve.

Hello  AS a thorn in the side of this club  try the date stamp mark on your motorcycle  allocated on the top edge of the top lug near the top head stock this is lug is for the engine steady top bolt you find it stamped on its top enge date stamp should be like my 1954 model 88 dated D/4/54 that April 1954 this is how you see it stamped my other Norton now well forgotten by this club and buried to is my Norton Manxman 650 dated M/12/60 yes that right december 1960 one of the very first batch of Norton 650s to be built, now set in stone for all time, like it or Not, the very First 650 ever made by Norton where the Norton Manxman 650s  and very fine motorcycle they where  only ten I have found to date are in this country,  Norvil is the only Norton motorcycle restorers to have under taken a full restoration of a early Norton Manxman 650,  and I am the other one that done the same but on a shoe string budget,  the Norton manxman also had the 41sa lighting switch,    And Not the 88Sa lighting switch has portarted by haynes Manuals   and I have a few 41sa original lucas lighting switch and some u39s and one 88sa light switch to maybe for a Norton jubilee   has it has a grey knob pardon the pun !     yours Anna J Dixon
