Oil level

Posted by john_brookes at August 10. 2018

The oil tank on my 1957 88 has three horizonal ribs. I think originally there should be a minimum oil level transfer there. Anyone any idea where this line should be?

John.

John........look in the menu box on the left. Click on Models.

Then click on Heavy Twins.

Scroll down until you reach the 650SS section.

Click on the photo of the 650SS and it should enlarge to show the oil tank with its level sticker visible near the top rib on this particular bike.  However, I would suggest that most Dominator oil tanks, wearing level stickers, that I have seen over the years have positioned it just below this rib. Generally about 5mm below.

In the Haynes Dominator Manual, the advice for routine maintenance is not to fill the oil tank above the top rib.

Thanks again Philip.

The oil level transfer, on Dominators, is pretty useless anyway. Looking through the filler, it is pure guesswork if the level is up to, or above, the outside line.  Either improvise a dipstick, or fill until oil just touches the top of the index finger, poker down the filler.  Maybe a bit crude, but, has worked fine for me, for over 60 years!

John:

Does not the owners manual state the capacity of the oil tank and/or the required re-fill amount after an oil change?

When it is full with the required amount of oil, measure down from the edge of the filler opening to the level in the tank and transfer that measurement to the outside of the tank.  Then that will be where the level sticker should be placed.

The next question is, how far down can you let the oil level get before it is necessary to top it up?

John isn't asking where the maximum oil level should be, he needs to know the minimum level, my manual just states that the oil level should not be allowed to be too low?

oil level is mid bar on the oil tank  or just above this  do not overfill as most of your oil is hanging  around the engine some were  there behalf pint in the sump this is normal  you need some oil in the sump  area for startups  it gets used straight away  for the oil pump  can scavenge on this bit of your half pint of oil  left over in the sump area    yours  anna j
