Dolls Head Manx Box Issues

Posted by dave_carpenter at November 21. 2018

Anyone know the correct part number for the MAIN SHAFT, in a Manx dolls head box...

I've been told its a N8030, but this is not correct and does not align up the clutch with the engine sprocket.

Also does anyone know where i can get one from.... either original or a new manufactured part, even another complete box as I'm running out of options...

Dave

Are you sure you have the correct offset engine sprocket ?

(There are several…)

Regards

Arne

Hi Dave,

The N8030 main-shaft is the standard shaft for all road-going upright gearboxes fitted from 1935 to 1949. This is the shaft that is used with the 5 plate standard clutch. The Manx shaft internal section length is the same and only differs where the narrower 3 plate racing clutch fits. You can use the N8030 in the Manx box but if you use a 3 plate clutch you will need to put a spacer and a thinner nut that holds the clutch and cut the plain section off the end so the mushroom can go back far enough. There is only one off-set for the Inter/L.S. Manx engine sprocket so you may have a problem with the clutch centre not going fully onto the shaft or there maybe something amiss with the bronze thrust washer in the box.

Regards,  Richard.

Thanks Richard, turns out after days of investigation that the spider i had in my 3 plate clutch was the wrong one, i have a few 3 plate manx clutches yet they are all different, very odd. Anyway I've managed to build up another clutch and it all lines up fine.

I've had the box apart 5 times over the weekend, so I'm now an expert on assembling the things at least. Ive also learnt that there are dog legs on the insider of the spider to stop the clutch going on too far. Out of 7 spiders i have only 2 it seems to have them.

Learning something new every day :)

Hi.

Part No for the mainshaft is A11M/324. RGM does -

MAINSHAFT PRE AMC (MANX) PRE 1958 LAYDOWN 8.56" LONG

- but, the Part No. given by RGM is A11/324 so best check first.

Regards.

Ian.
