38 Es2 engine drain bolt

Posted by ian_taylor1 at May 16. 2018

I went to remove the crankcase drain bolt on the Right side but ran into a snag.

it seems a socket will not fit due to the tight clearance between nut & frame. The slot has been increased over the years.

Other than using a punch to try and loosen it has someone found a better way to remove it ?

I will try again on Thursday.

My 1938 ES2 had a screwdriver slot in the drain plug. Still not totally successful so I machined up a new plug with a flange to accept the washer but with a reduced head. I can get a socket on now. Not original I know but hardly noticeable and much more functional.

I think originally a box spanner would have been used, which would have a smaller outside diameter. It may be worth getting hold of a spare socket and grinding the outside diameter down.

It did get the drain bolt out, cleaned up the slot for the screw driver.there was no gasket which explains the small drips .

I know I don't have a bix spanner but I think turning down a socket is the way to go.

I must say I do like Colin's bolt.

Thanks Guys
