Can anyone help me please my insurance company said they can add my Norton model 50 to my other bike insurance ( Carole Nash ) but they cant find model 50 listed under their list of Norton Models. i have had a look on a couple of companies and i cant find it either. is it known as another name? Can anyone recommend the best insurance company for a 57 model 50 that will only be ridden on rare occasions? thanks Ronnie

I always recommend Peter James (http://www.peterjamesinsurance.co.uk/) who have staff who understand old bikes and have very reasonable premiums (eg £90 / year for my ES2 and Guzzi V50).

The cover includes breakdown cover for UK & EU.

Carole Nash and others have been sold to huge companies who know nothing (and care less) about elderly motorcycles.

+1 for Peter James. I was with Carole Nash for a long time but it went downhill when she sold up to, I think, Groupama. The final nail in their coffin for me was their admin' fee. My renewal came round and it was about £160 but they added £50ish admin' fee which seemed ridiculous. Peter James was about the same £160 but no extra admin' fee.

Ronnie:

Does ES2 show up in their listings?

The model 50 was, basicly , an ES2 fitted with a 350 cc engine, it made no claims to be a sporting machine (although the featherbed versions handled better).   Insurance should cost no more than any standard 350, of the same era.

I wonder whether CN are using the DVLA database? I wanted the V5C my 1952 ES2 to show the model (the field was blank) and when I spoke to them they said that they could only include a model name that was supplied by the manufacturer. I did point out that the current owner of Norton Motorcycles had nothing to do with the Bracebridge Street firm and couldn't possibly help but he was adamant.

They cannot have all bikes ever made on their on-line computerised system.  Whenever I have spoken to Carol Nash they've been helpful enough, and they insure my weird old machine even though they don't have another like it on their system.  They do seem to have a worrying paranoia about modifications.
