Having searched here and on t’internet trying to get ( I hope) a defintive answer on this. The original green Norton handbook warns you of the perils of no lubrication, only advice given is ‘ensure adequate lubrication’! I would have thought adding oil until it comes out of level plug hole would have been correct but then i read about adding 200cc of oil which is much more i believe. Hoping not to spark off a huge debate on this

Yes will look at chain while running to see if it is picking up oil. I originally put 200cc in and a little leaked out but now stopped leaking but still at least up to level plug when on centre stand. Would like a belt drive sometime but determined to keep oil in case, know this is a major task with our old Nortons. I did once get it oiltight with no sealant just some red rubber grease but had to work on clutch and didn’t get it so good this time. Keeps me busy i guess!

You don't need..
.. to have it running. Just turn the engine over a couple of times then touch the top run of the chain with your finger. As long as there's some oil on it you're OK.
It will be unnecessary to say don't do this with it running........

I add oil till it runs out and stops then put the bike on side stand till it stops running out. If when kicking the bike over you can see oil on the top of the chain ,thats enough. A loose chain will sometimes pick up oil when a tight chain will not ,getting the chain adjustment right is critical to chain life.
