Headlight brackets 0 rings

Forums

Fitted some new fork gaiters last week and didn't notice the loose h/light brkts, so now have to fit new 0 rings, a bit of a bugger I've been told?

Not really, remove the old ones, then just insert the stanchion into the lower yoke, fit o rings and slide the stanchion in a little more, but not so far as to prevent fitting of headlamp ear. Tip the headlamp ear slightly to get the bottom end over the stanchion then bring headlamp ear vertically into its position. Fit top o ring through the hole in the top yoke and slider the stanchion home into top yoke. Repeat for other side.

Yes - I have not found an easy way to fit them yet.

The only way that I can see that you fit them is to let the fork leg down on one side - then remove the fork crown (top yoke) & press the O ring onto the h/light bracket using lube (WD40?).

You then replace the fork crown and try to encourage the fork leg back up through the O ring, while the fork crown prevents it from coming off.

Thats the bit I struggle with. Maybe original O rings were thinner on the inside than the ones you buy now? For the love of you-know-what, I usually cannot get the fork top taper to pass through.

So - any bright ideas, anyone?

Before the top yoke is fitted, if the fork stanchions are pushed up through the bottom yoke further than actually necessary, the lower o-rings, brackets and upper o-rings can be installed on the stanchions, clear of the taper.  Then loosely attach the top yoke with the fork nuts to keep the taper engaged in the yoke and incrementally twist/pull each stanchion in turn downwards through the bottom yoke until the top yoke is fully engaged with the steering head stem, secure with stem nut and then finger-tighten the stanchion top nuts. Final tightening is after headlamp and wheel installation, and fork operation to first align all parts.  During the above operations, keep checking the o-rings to ensure they settle into the yoke grooves correctly; a light silicone spray will assist.

That is how I do it anyway; it is easy enough and works fine for me.

Andy.
