Headstock bearing adjuster nut

Forums

Just thought I’d give a ‘shout out’ for a helpful manufacturer/supplier.

I recently purchased a pair of sealed headstock bearings from one of the big suppliers. The bearings are good quality Timken items. They have an inner race bore of 25mm diameter. I ordered a new stainless steel bearing adjuster nut from ‘Triton Cafe Racer Parts’ after having had problems with the nuts from the ‘big’ suppliers. When I received it, the diameter of the collar that fits into the bearing was 25.4mm - that’s the standard size that he makes them.  Normally that would mean yet another ‘problem purchase’ requiring a hunt for another supplier. However, Steve at Triton Cafe Racer Parts was really helpful and made me a new nut to exactly the dimensions I needed. It fits perfectly and has a really high quality finish.

I just thought I’d mention this in case anyone else goes the Timken sealed bearing route and looks to buy a stainless bearing adjuster nut that fits. I have no connection with Triton Cafe Racer Parts apart from being a very satisfied customer.

Hi Edward. I got my bearings from RGM and from what I remember, the dimensions are as you have stated. The top bearing sits about 0.5mm above the headstock tube. I’ve not fully built up the front end yet but I’ve got both yokes fitted and the bearings adjusted - they are absolutely fine. I’ve got the dust cover under the adjuster nut but I didn’t put a felt washer underneath the dust cover as that seemed to cause a bit of binding and movement restriction when the adjuster nut was done up to remove the up/down play.

Hope that helps

Hi Ed. If you’ve gone to sealed bearings on the headstock, you need a spacer tube between the two bearings, otherwise the bearings will push too far into the headstock. My guess is that you haven’t fitted the spacer tube. Ittavailable from RGM.

Forks Gap

Hi Tony I have ordered the spacer tube will fit it tomorrow im a bit concerned on the gap where the pencil is pointing to. The gap is about 6mm every thing on the yoke has been nipped up my fault on the previous message I just had not nipped it up tight enough. I have also ordered a dust cover to sit on top of the bearing and just worried it might not take up the 6mm where the pencil is pointing to will that be a issue or is that just cosmetic.

Hi Dan please see the picture of the forks.

Thanks

My first impression of the fork set-up is that the stanchions need to be re-positioned.

The spacer tube is an essential part if you have gone down the sealed ball bearing head race route. It must fit precisely so that the outer race sits in the headstock shoulder cup s while sharing the load between the inner races and bearings.

I agree with Phillip, as I recall the adjuster nut flange above the flats should fit inside the stanchion, I wonder if the yoke needs paint/powder coat removing to ease it? Either that or the adjuster nut dimensions are wrong.

I'm using sealed bearings with a spacer in between and it all fitted up perfectly.

That gap at the top doesn't look right at all on yours and if as you say, you have run out of threads on the steering stem, then one or more of the components is incorrect.  Are the bottom yokes original?

As Phil (above) says, you must use the spacer with the sealed bearings and maybe remove your stanchions/fork legs until you have the headstock area correct.

What is the fit of your headlamp ears like with the rubber grommets fitted to the tops of them?  I would imagine they will move up and down and not be a snug fit.

Your picture shows the top yoke sat snuggly on the top of the adjuster nut  flats. Eddies is sitting on top of the flange. I’m pretty sure the problem is the flange is not fitting inside the top yoke. I think Eddie has sorted them”lack of thread” issue?

If the spacer is not "fit for use" can you not return it for a full refund?
