1954 bolt up Dommie speedo.

Forums

Hello, I am trying to identify the correct parts to try and find.

I have searched for a smiths fitment list but have drawn a blank strangely.

Does anyone know can I use a BG 5338/257 drive box with a 5 foot 7 1\2 cable?

If not what should I use and what is the correct speedo?

Thanks Keith

From my recent dablings with cables , I would say that the length will work if the speedo is mounted  at a height similar to the early 60's set up ( in the headlamp)  and that the cable would have taken the lower frame route. The speedo drive unit should have the gears ratio enscribed on the back , and that cables for chronos and magnetic heads are  not interchangeable. Crono cables have the short nut at the speedo end and can be got with the long armoured top outer.  Others can answer the rest of your questions.

My Smiths literature shows speedo as S467/147/L  and gear box as 52283/65/1. Cable length is stated as 4ft 9 inches with the number 53395/1. These fitments suit 1954 and 55 altering for 1956 to 58. Hope this helps, Phil.

Hi Phill,  4ft 9" does sound very short  at 57"  ,might be worth checking that. Could that have been 5ft 9"  ie   69"  ?.   I am using a 70"  on my slimline  ,admittedly its a little long!!. But 13" is a huge difference.

Robert/ Keith,

Checked my info again and it states 4ft 9ins but I agree, it does seem rather short. The stated cable length for 1956 to 58 jumps to 5ft 71/2 which seems nearer the mark. I have just traced the cable run on my 54 Dommie with string and it measures approx 5ft 8ins which would confirm the second figure. I will write a strongly worded letter to Smiths for supplying such misinformation??????  Phil.
