Difficulty in selecting First gear, Laydown gearbox

My 1955 single seems very reluctant to go into first gear from a standstill, is there anything to adjust that would cure this problem. The clutch frees fine and I have no problem changing up or down in the other gears

The most common cause is clutch drag . I spent years chasing my tail till I realised there was no clearance between the back of the clutch and the sleeve gear. Some say this does not matter .

make sure you have the correct handlebar lever with 1.1/16" pivot-to-nipple dimension to give maximum lift.
