Gearbox cover O-rings

Forums

Hi. I’m rebuilding the gearbox outer cover of my Dommie 99 and want to replace the two O-rings (the one that sits between the kickstart bush and the cover and the one that sits between the gear selector shaft bush and the cover). Is it possible to replace them without removing the bushes or do the O-rings need to be inserted from the inside of the cover (into empty bores)? If the bushes have to come out, I’ll replace them with new ones. I imagine that I’ll need to heat the cover to get the old bushes out and to fit the new ones - yes/no? I guess I’ll need to be careful that I don’t overheat the cover when replacing the bushes so that I don’t damage the installed O-rings.

I’ve purchased X-rings rather than plain (ordinary) O-rings as they were advertised as giving a better seal - we’ll see.

Thanks

Regards

Tony

It might also be an idea to use bit of grease on the splines to get the cover back over them without damaging the o/x rings.

.. some electrician's tape to cover the splines / serrations. Apply it from the inside outwards in a spiral so the seal slides over the tape easily.
