Manxman Silencers

Forums

A pair of Manxman silencers will finally be fabricated. I have ordered one pair for a member who wanted a pair of them. Should any one from the club, want them then please contact me. The exhaust pipes we can get fabricated, if we can get a 650 Norton to the fabricator so that he can use it to make them to the bike. I can also get Nomad silencers made if any one wants them. Due to the latest events I have not been able to get out to see the company that will be making these silencers for me.

hello, now Anthony is doing  this alone  he paying out a lot of cash to get this job done and only guy within this club sticking his neck out to get something do about these type of silencer as this Club is not helping these silencers are not easy to make  as there are two baffles inside one inside the other and spaced out and have a mushroom-style cap on the end of the baffles  inside the silencer and It is what I have found inside my silencers As I have had them looked at by a friend with his drainage  cam equipment,   to see inside yes Anthony doing a great job and I do hope this club gives him some support, Now the downpipes are just as crucial as the silencers as without them nothing fits right or lines up,  so it's not just about the silencers  Well we see what he has done when he gets them, sorted love, to see some photos of his jobs he has done,   but like I said there not going to be a cheap job  but well done Anthony  Yours  anna j

Anthony are you looking to get a batch running to help with the cost or individuals to order as  required?  I'm not sure what the message is saying.  There have been several conversations  on the forum regarding these unique Silencers.  If someone is committed to tooling up to  manufacture, a steady order stream it would influence the way he does, and potentially a little  saving for the customers.

Cheers

These silencers will be made to individuals who have ordered them, which i have only had the one order for. I once ordered about ten P11A rear mudguards, and those that wanted them, never came back to me when i had paid out for them. This i will not be ever doing again. These silencers will not be made by press tooling as I have been advised that this will cost me thousands of pounds. This I am not prepared to lay out for, as I have had only one member who came forward to order a pair of them. I shall also get a pair of them for myself, for my own Manxman restoration. These silencers will be fabricated by a real craftsman, and as they are so unique they are not going to be cheap to have made. I just need to get the fabricator a bike, so that he can then make the exhaust pipes to the bike, and then line up the silencers. There is some small disagreement about the exhaust pipe on the drive, side or the primary chance side. Some pictures show this with a slight bend in it, and some do not. I would like to get this right, but the factory pictures can be confusing.

... Anthony.  I hope the manxman fraternity help you out with the header detail you mention.   This sounds a fine opportunity to address the scarcity of these items. Maybe Anna has knowledge of the needy owners, or the detail your craftsman requires.

Would appreciate pictures of the work. Finished or otherwise.

Best regards

Hi Anthony, I have an Atlas with a strange  set of pipes on it. Large bore and a very tight fit in the rose nuts. The timing side is different to the drive side and appears to be more bent towards the frame to give plenty of clearance to the RC drive. It seems possible that these are Manxman pipes? .I can take photos and dimensions if need be. I think the best drive side line is as pictured on Sheldons EMU. with a slight rise under the footrest. I also get the impression that there was not a lot of consistancy with the pipe bending at the factory as at the time , normally farmed out?.So photos taken at different times could show slightly different lines ,but all orriginals!!. Maybe some made in the factory and later some farmed out. Can't please everyone ,will be a compromise.Rose nuts would benefit from an internal skim on a lathe to avoid damage to pipe chrome on our bike, they are that tight due to bends right into ports.

I have recently seen a 1966 Atlas that has sat since being imported from USA in the 80's it was unmolested and showed about 7000 miles, it had a right hand pipe with a defernite kink in it I think 1 1/2 -1 5/8" in diameter , I have since seen a set of similar pipes at the same place [ former bike importer] possibly part of a dismantled Manxman that was there though they looked similar to those fitted to the Atlas.

The club member who ordered a pair of Manxman silencers has supplied the silencer fabricator with a pair of genuine exhaust pipes. On the timing side there is the bend but on the primary chain-case side there is no bend. I have seen pictures of both styles of bends, and I am using the Cycle World road test as a basis for my own Manxman restoration. I have only had the order for one pair of Manxman silencers so far, and no more. After the two pairs have been made, then I shall not bother any more about getting any more fabricated. .

To answer the question about my Manxman project. My Manxman project is mostly crammed into a wardrobe in the spare room, with the frame, and wheels in the garage and shed out side. A box in the loft with all the parts that will need to be painted in the correct Manxman blue colour. I did manage to obtain a brand new Manxman dual seat that has never been on a bike. I have been collecting parts for it, for over 14 years, and very soon, I can start to get it built. I have the correct handlebars, and these came from a very unexpected source. I only need the exhaust pipes to be fabricated and I can start to get it built.

Thank you Richard, and every one else's kind comments and words of encouragement. It has been a long hard slog, but I am nearing the end, but my two Nomads were so much harder to be restored. I can get Nomad silencers made for any one that wants them, but for the second time of asking, I have not had one response. There cannot be that many Nomad owners out there, that want a correctly fabricated Nomad silencer.

Hello now check out mike tyie Manxman project you tube now this project of a Norton Manxman 650 is none other then the first 650  production model and check out scanning the Exhaust pipes and silencers and check out his silencer. Sound test Standard 650SS Vs Manxman Silencers and you can hear that distinctive deeper exhaust note From the Manxman silencers there just music to your ears that the reason we love to resorect these silencer for there nice sound they make,  and there is no other silencer ever made like them there so stylish And Wish they had after burners to make the bike go like a rocket I see if I can get a pair made from ditainium they be a wee bit expensive but that look super Cool         Yours. The company I deal with only fabricate their exhaust systems in stainless steel, but the next time I am there I shall ask them. I am still unsure of the primary chain-case side, exhaust pipe, if it has a slight kink it or not. I am not going to get a pair made, and Anna tell me they are wrong and will not buy them, as that has happened before. I bought a Ducati parts book from the USA back in the 1980's, and the person who wanted it, said it was the wrong one, and I still have it. I had a friend ask me to get him a shifter improver kit for his Camaro's auto gearbox TH350. He sold the car, before it arrived, so I was stuck with it. This has also happened as I have explained about the P11A rear mudguards.

I recently looked at a head on shot of a Manxman and it did show the primary side with an inwards kick similar to the timing side. I have also seen manxmen  with pipes that did not give an upwards sweep at the silencer.  I suspect these may have been made to accomodate the later SS type  silencer which HAS to sit lower to use the cranked silencer bracket. I can't imagine anyone being happy with that droopy look. Richard Wylers new Manxman has the look. Anna's looks wrong to me.But don't tell her I said that!.

I am assuming that AJD means Titanium? If she thinks that having mild or stainless silencers manufactured  are going to be expensive then she had better sit down before she sees a quote for Titanium. Where on earth does all this drivel come from?

Hello  Now Are you talking silencers or Downpipes now For the Downpipes see Mike Tiye Youtube video of him getting a set of the originals scanned in Portland you see that both sides have kink but the right has more kink than the left  And  My Silencer are the originals Made in house at Bracebridge street  So pick the bones out of that  and making them in stainless maybe aright but will they have the same sound  has the originals has they do have that nice tone to them  see Mike Tiyes Youtube Manxman silencer tests  and you can hear the difference from the SS silencers,             yours  anna j

Hello No I did mean Ditanium Space metal you not even hear of, like thorium have you hear of this  and element 115 witch there having a hard time to even make  Ditanium is made in space so a space alloy and with its own shape memory it's reversed engineering  and it's not  Drivel as you call it just because you have not informed of such things and you may not of been informed of these A Thorium magnetic fusion  engine  the power for warp drive but this may just too advanced engineering for you  but this does exist   under black projects programs   so in 60 years all these petrol engines  and diesels and even electric vehicles will be all gone  by then we be using thorium magnetic levitating vehicles  powered by small  magnetic thorium fusion containment engine witch is no radioactive pollutants  but as the power of the sun this is the engineering field I am working in now with others  And Now you put all this off-topic buy answering you   As for the Norton Manxman is about preserving the past before its gone,  but this may be all dribble to you guys

Looking at the pipes ,I see distinct differences between M Tylers pipes ,Anna's pipes and those in the photo of Richard Wylers  new Manxman. Mostly to do with the downward angle of the pipes as they exit the rose nuts. I suspect they are all correct orriginal pipes !. Just made differently ,either in the factory or because later batches were farmed out in the more usual way. It seems we have a choice of patterns. If it was me choosing I would go for the best line as in RW's bike although I suspect these will be the hardest to make as they will be a tight fit in the nuts like the ones on our Atlas.Perhaps thats why we see design changes.

Yes my pipes were made just about to fit and are from a model 99SS late model only things I could find at the time but they do the job, but they are 1.5/8ths bore witch the Norton Manxman,s were.   And even the very early Atlas used the same pipes as the Manxman but had Norton,s smooth look cigar type silencers     and not the Manxam type silencer so this left the Norton Manxman 650 with its own set of exhaust system and one that as its own exhaust note and a nice sound.    And I will get to having to. Make a set of pipes to the Manxman style     as cash allows                 yours. Anna j
